Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

As people age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life can be seen in their faces. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth; the jawline grows slack and jowly; folds and fat deposits appear around the neck.

A facelift, technically known as rhytidectomy, can’t stop this aging process. What it can do is “set back the clock,” improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping.

Frequently Asked Questions about Facelifts (Rhytidectomy)

Is a facelift right for me?

If you have signs of aging in your lower face, including jowls, wrinkling, and loose skin, a facelift can help rejuvenate your appearance by eliminating loose skin and tightening the underlying face muscles.

If you are generally healthy, and have reasonable expectations of the procedure, a facelift might be just right for you.

Will my face look pulled tight?

No. Modern facelifts involve a little more finesse than the old-style facelifts, which just pulled the skin back. We’ll tighten your facial muscles and carefully eliminate excess skin and drooping, without leaving you with that obvious ‘facelift’ look of the past.

How long will my results last?

A facelift will not reverse the effects of aging, but it does turn back the clock, so that your skin will always be more taut, and your facial muscles more youthful looking, than if you hadn’t had the procedure.

Will there be scarring?

The incisions for a facelift are designed to follow the natural facial contours, in front of each ear, and sometimes, along the underside of the chin. This serves to camouflage any resulting scarring.

Of course, your final scarring is dependent on a number of individual factors, including skin type, healing ability, and certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking.

Can I combine a facelift with other procedures?

Yes. Many of our patients opt to have several cosmetic rejuvenation procedures done at once. Popular choices in combination with a facelift include blepharoplasty (or eyelift) and facial implants, to restore prominence to the facial features.
