The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Studies have also suggested that Botox® is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes.
Frequently Asked Questions about Botox®
Is Botox® safe?
Generally, Botox® Cosmetic treatments are considered safe. Side effects are generally minimal and rare. For example, you may experience slight bruising at the injection site, or temporary drooping of the eyelids.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
Botox is injected into the muscle tissue surrounding a wrinkle via a small needle. The discomfort is minimal and usually lasts a few seconds. Botox relaxes the muscle tissue by blocking nerve impulses to it. Within a couple of days the results can be clearly seen and will last for several months, after which the procedure can be performed again.
Am I Eligible to Receive Botox Injection?
Women who are pregnant or nursing should wait to have the procedure done, since the side effects associated with pregnancy are unknown at this time. Medication such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and aspirin, will increase bruising. Younger people who have wrinkles but do not want to have a facelift are good candidates. As with all medical procedures, a consultation with a local cosmetic surgeon will help you find out if you are a candidate.
How long does Botox® last?
Botox® treatments will generally last for several months.
Can I have repeat treatments?
Yes. Many patients choose to repeat their Botox® treatments as soon as they feel the effects diminishing, but before the wrinkling returns. In some cases, patients have found that their lines are permanently diminished following multiple Botox® treatments.
